Krystol Internal Membrane™ (KIM®)

The Original and Only Crystalline Waterproofing Admixture With More Than 40 Years of Demonstrated Success.

How It Works

Krystol® is a crystalline admixture that transforms concrete into a self-sealing, waterproof barrier. It reacts with moisture and unhydrated cement to form insoluble, needle-shaped crystals that fill micro-cracks and pores, blocking water and contaminants.

Unlike traditional systems like membranes, which can degrade over time, Krystol remains permanently active. It reinitiates crystallization whenever moisture enters the concrete, even years later. As part of the concrete matrix, it offers long-term protection against hydrostatic pressure and harsh conditions—perfect for India’s demanding concrete structures.

Dosage

Dose at a minimum of 0.8% by weight of cement. A pre-pour meeting with the general contractor, forming contractor, finisher, concrete supplier,
and materials testing engineer is suggested. Under certain project conditions/mix designs, the dosage may vary and may have to be adjusted
up-to maximum of 8 kg /m3 (13.5 lb/yd3), in consultation with KRYTON representative.

Cement as per IS 456:2000.

Why Krystol?

Proven over 50 years

Introduced over 50 years ago, Krystol® Internal Membrane (KIM) was the world’s first crystalline waterproofing admixture. Its long-standing performance is proven by the lasting durability of structures built with it.

Integral Admixture

Unlike surface-applied membranes that can wear down over time, Krystol® Internal Membrane (KIM) is built right into the concrete. This integral waterproofing solution works for the entire life of the structure—eliminating the need for future maintenance.

Permanent Reactive Technology

Moisture activates Krystol® technology at any time, continuously forming crystals to seal cracks and pores—delivering permanent waterproofing and long-term concrete durability.

Versatile

Krystol® Internal Membrane (KIM) is compatible with cast-in-place, precast, and shotcrete applications, providing mix design flexibility while reducing shrinkage and cracking in concrete foundations.

Safe

Kryton’s waterproofing admixture is engineered to resist damage from H₂S-generating bacteria—commonly found in water infrastructure—without relying on pesticides, silver, or copper. Safe for potable water use, it is NSF-certified for trusted performance.

Sustainable

Krystol® technology transforms concrete into its own waterproof barrier, reducing the carbon footprint and eliminating the need for extra materials and processes used in traditional external waterproofing systems.

KIM is a hydrophilic crystalline admixture used to create permanently waterproof concrete.

Waterproofing Structural Shotcrete Without A Membrane

Structural shotcrete is becoming a preferred concreting method in foundation construction, building tanks, parking garages and many other structures because it’s up to 50% faster than conventional cast in place.

Protect Marine Structures with Crystalline Waterproofing

Use the right products to protect and increase the lifespan of infrastructure in harsh marine environments.

Smart Concrete®

The most effective concrete waterproofing system in the world. Kryton’s Smart Concrete® solutions contain proprietary technologies that allow concrete to respond to its environment to protect itself against water penetration and corrosion, or erosion and abrasion.

Precast Concrete Waterproofing

Krystol Internal Membrane™ (KIM®) is a hydrophilic crystalline admixture used to create permanently waterproof concrete.

Construction and Repair of Concrete Tunnels

Construct watertight tunnels that last. Tunnels can be subjected to heavy traffic and vibration, temperature changes, corrosion damage and freeze thaw cycles which affect the tunnel’s durability.

Construction and Repair of Concrete Water Containment Structure

Construct watertight water containment structures that last. Take the risk out of creating watertight tanks from the begining by using Kryton’s Krystol Internal Membrane™ (KIM®) admixture and Krystol Waterstop Joint System.

The Science of Krystol Technology

Krystol crystalline admixture and other technology is based on principles that are very similar to the processes that occur during the hydration and hardening of concrete. Cement is mainly made up of several calcium silicates. When cement particles are mixed with water, a chemical reaction occurs whereby these calcium silicates combine with the water to form new compounds. The new compounds are calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) and calcium hydroxide.

Silica Fume and KIM®

When concrete producers want to modify the properties of concrete, supplemental cementing materials (SCM’S) can be used to achieve the intended goal. These materials are added to the concrete at the time of batching and are typically a replacement for a portion of the Portland cement. Silica Fume is a very common SCM that is frequently used to increase the strength and durability of a concrete structure. Used in the right proportion, it can also reduce the overall cost of the concrete.

10 Reasons to Choose KIM® Admixture over Waterproofing Membrane Systems

It’s becoming clear to many leaders involved in the construction industry that waterproofing concrete from the inside out is the best choice. Commonly called integral systems, these are densifiers, water repellents and reactive/crystalline products that are added to new concrete at the batching plant or on-site and react chemically within the concrete.

Do Blind-sided Applications have your back to the Wall?

Traditional waterproofing methods encourage the use of positive-side waterproofing during construction. However, this requires access to the outside wall of the concrete structure. When access is restricted, blind or negative-side applications are often necessary. Unlike old-fashioned external membranes, which rely on an additional hurdle to shield the concrete from moisture, Krystol® crystalline admixtures actually transform the concrete into a water-resistant barrier.

Replace Unreliable Waterproofing Membranes

It’s the intelligent, self-sealing water-protection system that transforms concrete into a powerful water-resistant barrier through crystalline admixtures or surface applied treatments. Krystol® relies on a revolutionary crystalline technology that turns porous concrete into an impermeable barrier. The result is a structure with reduced cracking, self-sealing and waterproofing abilities that provide a powerful defense against water damage and corrosion of reinforcing steel.
